Have you ever judged someone as unlikely to be a Christian
just because they didn’t look the part?
just because they didn’t look the part?
I’m so thankful that God doesn’t give up on
me! Time and again He patiently teaches
me things... And just when I think I’ve finally got it, Bam! Here we go again!
Many times God graciously, and I’m sure with a huge smile, allows people to cross my path that just don’t ‘look’ Christian. (Whatever that means!) And yet, when I’ve gotten to know them, they’re some of the most committed Christ followers I know.
Last year my husband and I became acquainted with
a young man who works at a local business. Every week we exchanged
social pleasantries about the weather, the Steelers, or the rising price of
gas. A few months ago my husband and I were invited to visit a Saturday evening
service at a local church. After the service, we’d just gotten into our car
when we heard someone yelling our names.
We looked across the parking lot to find a smiling young man running
toward us. It was our friend from the local business. He was so excited to
see us and we were so.... Shocked!
You see, our friend just doesn’t look like your ‘typical’ church goer. (Whatever
that means!) He has very long dyed-raven-black hair, several interesting tattoos, multiple piercings, and a tough demeanor. Yes, we were shocked to see him there, but so excited as our parking lot
conversation revealed that he’s new to the faith. And oh, how he loves Jesus!
Since that evening, we’ve exchanged several
prayer requests: my dad’s health, his mom’s salvation, my son’s safety, his
cigarette habit. He often has a prayer request and is eager to hear mine. Isn’t that just like God to mix things up a
little bit and take us outside of our neatly packaged little boxes?! Unlikely prayer partners? Not in God's heart-seeing eyes!
I'm so thankful that God looks beyond the 'seen' and into our hearts.

"So Peter opened his mouth and said:
“Truly I understand that God shows no partiality..."

I'd love to hear from you!
Mary, thanks for your honesty. Reading this made me realize that I do the same thing sometimes. I could kick myself, but instead I'll ask for forgiveness and ask the Lord to help me never judge someone based on appearance again.
