When All You Can Do Is Breathe

Lately, I've found myself quietly sitting in His presence a lot.  I've had a migraine every day for over two weeks.  So, to be honest, writing anything is a bit of a struggle.  BUT,  as a dear friend so eloquently put it... this is a terrible time and a wonderful time.

No, there's nothing pretty or enjoyable or wonderful about blinding, nauseating pain. But, there is something wonderful when our Abba Father quietly nudges the door open and I slip into His loving arms... and He just holds me.  It's at those times that my very breath is a prayer... no words, just breathing in His love for me and breathing out my love to Him.

I'd like to encourage you to take some time today to slip into His quieting, loving,
strong arms. Perhaps you have words for Him, perhaps you're only
able to breathe in His love and breathe out yours to Him...

I'd be honored to pray for you this week.
It may simply be breathing your name to the Lord,
but it would help take my thoughts off
of 'Me' and would put them on you and our Lord.
If you don't feel comfortable leaving your need in the comments,
please feel free to email or message me on Facebook.

I'd love to hear about your time with our Lord.
Are you having trouble going to Him in prayer?
Have you made time to sit with Him today?

Problem Solved!

Oh, the guilt!  For years {years!} I beat myself up because I couldn’t make early morning quiet time work.  I haven’t slept well in, oh... ever.  So dragging myself out of bed to have quiet time when I’d just gone to sleep? You guessed it.  It was just so... quiet, that I kept dozing off!  And then, I’d not only be exhausted, I’d have a major battle with guilt.

So, some years ago, after much prayer, I’m pretty sure God said it was OK for me to have my set-apart time later in the day. :)  No, my day isn’t ruined because I’m not in His word at 5 a.m.  I talk with Him and listen for His voice all day long.  And He’s there with me every moment of every grace-filled day.

OK, quiet-time problem #1... Solved

Now, on to quiet-time problem #2.

For a long time {far longer than I care to admit}, I’d get comfortable in my cozy chair with my journal, devotional, and Bible in hand.  I’d whip out my prayer journal and pray through the written requests, add new requests and... Check that off my mental list.

Next, I’d read my daily devotional, pray the prayer at the close of the devotion and... Check that off my mental list.

Next, I’d open my Bible and jump to the scripture of the day.  Read a few chapters and... Check that off my mental list.

Next, I’d stack my journal, devotional, and Bible on the little table by my comfy chair, get up and go on to do the next thing on my mental list... Check.

And then, do it all again the next day... Check.

Do you see anything wrong with this picture?
That’s right!  I was doing ‘good’ things, but they’d become
chores to be checked off a list, and not a passion springing from
the depths of my soul.

Somewhere along the line, my passion had begun to look a lot like an agenda.

Well, it evidently didn’t sit well with our Abba Father because,
by His immeasurable grace, I began to be extremely dissatisfied with
my quiet time.   I knew something was very wrong...  I’d become as the Pharisees.
Doing what, from the outside looked good, but in my inner-most being?
I found myself empty and desperate for... something.

So, I began to pray; asking our Abba Father what He wanted my quiet-time to look like.
This is what I got...

It’s a sacred time... set apart for and by Him.
It’s about relationship, not agenda.
It’s about passionate praise and prayer. {Psalm 99:3, Philippians 4:6}
It’s about reading/experiencing/living His word.  {2 Timothy 3:16}
It’s about singing and music.  {Psalm 146:2}
It’s about sitting and listening and hearing... {Psalm 46:10}
It’s about reading a book... maybe a devotional and maybe not.
It’s about asking Him each day what He wants our time to look like. {James 1:5}
It’s about allowing Him to change it up. :)
It’s about inviting Him to sanctify me... from the inside out. {I Thessalonians. 5:23}

I wouldn’t for a minute, tell you that getting up early and having a set pattern in your quiet time isn’t wonderful.  Actually, it may be the very best thing for you.  And that’s great!

But God knows my prone-to-be-like-a-Pharisee heart and has designed something a little different for my set-apart time.

Who knows, maybe someday I'll be up at 5 a.m., sitting in my chair, wide awake, and having a quiet time that looks very different.
But for now...

With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:10-11  ESV

Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10 NLT

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,
for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
God is spirit, and those who worship him
must worship in spirit and truth.
John 4:23-24 ESV

I’d love to hear what your quiet-time looks like.
Or perhaps you don't have a set-apart time.
I'd like to hear about that too!

Yes, You Matter

I ran into Aldi’s the other day to do a little grocery shopping. I  just needed chicken, raw almonds and feta cheese.  That’s it.  Quick. Easy. In and out.  Or so I thought.  After quickly buzzing through the store, I got up to the ONE check-out line and found twelve people- no joke- standing there.  Most with shopping carts heaped high with groceries.  Well, I said to my grumbly self, “Sheesh, you’d think they’d open another line or at least, someone would let me go ahead of them since I’ve only got a few things. I really don’t have time for this.  I’ve got way too much to do!”

And then, totally out of the blue, this thought came to mind... “Mary, you need to pray for these people.”  Now, I’ve come to realize that when I have a totally out-of-the-blue-not-what-I-want-to-do thought that, though not audible, is still deeply impressed upon my heart... Yep, it’s probably the Holy Spirit.
So, deciding to be quasi-obedient, I began a pretty generic draw-them-all-to-You kind of prayer.  And then another not-me thought came to mind...  “Mary, pray specifically for each person in this store.”  And my thought, “But I can’t! I’ll lose my place in line!”  Really Mary?  You’ll lose your place in line?  Really?  That's the best you've got?!

So, I turned my cart around, {darn, now I was fifth in line} and began
to take notice of each person around me.
I began to walk back through the aisles and pray specifically for:

The man with the skeleton tattoo on his neck.

The woman with blond hair, black roots and multiple piercings.

The mom with the red-headed toddler and sleeping baby in the cart.

The sad-faced, white haired woman choosing ice-cream.

The elderly gentleman with a slight limp and a kind smile.

The forty-something woman on her cell-phone.

The tall blond woman in a black dress coat on her cell-phone.

And, on it went.

After each person had been prayed for, I finally made my way back to the front of the store.  There was no one left in the check-out line... just me.  So I loaded my few groceries onto the belt, talked and laughed with the cashier, handed her my money and waving good-bye, prayed for her.

After loading my groceries, I sat in my car, head on the steering wheel and cried...
Oh God, what an honor it is to pray for those You love.  Forgive me for my selfishness.   Help me to have Your heart for those around me.  Help me to, at the very least, give mental recognition to each person I see.  They exist. They matter.  Help me to love as You love, care about those You care about.
 Show me Lord...

     1.  It’s not about me or my schedule.

     2.  Every single person matters.  You matter.  God cares deeply for each man, woman, and child that I walk past.

3.  No one, No. One.  is nameless or faceless to Him.

     4.  When God says “Go”, never say “But, I....”  Don’t say anything but... Yes.

I need to go to Wal-Mart this week... That's a very busy place.  Lots of people.
Honestly, I'm a little worried that the Lord will ask me to pray for everyone there... Surely not :)

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another”
John 13:34, 35

How aware are you of the people around you?
Has God asked you to do something out of your box?!
If so, how did you respond?

A Pretty Little Sin

Before beginning each post, I spend time in prayer asking God what He would have me share. I always ask that He would, in some way, show me what would draw our hearts closer to Jesus and bring glory to Him. Well, some posts are easier to write than others. This is definitely an 'other'. I pray today that you will hear my heart, for I write not out of judgement but out of woeful self-discovery and a great love for you, my sister. So, here goes...

Sin...

Sin can be so...sneaky.  It clothes itself in  I just made a mistake,  it's just a bad habit,  it's harmless,  I deserve it,  it's understandable, or I have a right.

Sin is a liar. It would have you believe that it is little and innocent and... pretty.

It sometimes looks like resentment all dressed up as understandable because...
The kids are driving you crazy, your husband didn't help with the housework,
and your friend hasn't returned your texts.

It sometimes looks like helping to set up for the Women's Banquet at church,
then coming home to criticize and bash the other ladies because
You had to do all the work.

It sometimes begins with a little harmless conversation about your husband
to your best friend, and turns into a lunch filled with husband-bashing.

It sometimes looks so pretty dressed up as humility.  When in reality,
you self-deprecate so that others will compliment you and build you up.

Sin can blind us to its presence and can even convince us that we’re in the Light, even as we set up housekeeping in darkness.  It may not be loud and obvious, but it subtly and persuasively draws us away from The One who is Light and Life.

So, what do we do with this thing called SIN?
•We pray.
•We search ourselves.
•We ask our father to take  off the pretty dress that our sin is wearing and reveal that which seduces us away from Him.
•We recognize that sin always seeks to destroy our relationship with our Father.
•We go before our Lord, and confess... telling Him everything.
•We, with broken heart, ask for and receive His forgiveness, turning away from the sin.
And then...
•We rejoice because He has paid the ultimate price for our sins with His very life.
•We rejoice because He has forgiven the sin that was quietly, yet surely, strangling us to death.
•We thank Him.
•We praise His holy name.
And then we go on, only and always... with Him.

"Finally, I confessed all my sins to You and
stopped trying to hide my guilt.  I said to myself,
"I will confess my rebellion to the LORD."
And You forgave me!  All my guilt is gone.
 Psalm 32:5 NLT

Where are you with this today?
Have you overcome a sin struggle?
Is God taking the 'pretty dress' off of a sin in your life?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

From My Heart To Yours

Today, I pray that you have...

A day filled with opportunities to speak kind words.

Just the right moment to give encouragement to someone in need.

A rich time in the sweet word of God.

A song of praise... one that you just can't seem to get 'out of your head'!

A peace that allows you to rest your anxious mind in Him.

A heart that is swollen with gratitude and thanksgiving

I pray that you have a day filled to overflowing with Jesus.

Living in His grace,
Mary

I Just Needed A Friend

Source
There's just something special about sharing your heart with a girlfriend.

A few weeks ago I felt like my life, once again, was spinning out of control. I was feeling terrible, my husband was laid off, and we found that our 120 year old house needed a new porch roof and new basement stairs... Yep, I could go on (and on), but I won't.

I cried out to the Lord and He heard me. I cried out to my husband and he heard me. I felt so much better after talking with them. But I knew that I also needed to share my heart with...a girlfriend.

I'm not saying that God wasn't enough. Of course He was. But He's called us to community for a reason. He created us to need one another, and I needed the gentle words and understanding of another woman.

I went over to my friend's house. I know she had a thousand things to do, but with sincere concern, she led me to the couch. We sat down, she touched my arm, and by that simple touch, I was wordlessly encouraged to share my fears and disappointments.

The flood gate was opened and deep-hurt words began to pour from me. Some words I had already shared with my Lord and my husband, and some words were new even to me.

♥ I love that my friend didn't give me a pep-talk; she gave me a listening ear.
♥ I love that my friend didn't give me a list of scriptures; she lived the scriptures by her grace-filled understanding, and sacrifice of time.

{There are certainly times when I need a good pep-talk, and there are times when I need a list of scriptures; but I'm so thankful that she knew that this was not one of those times!}

Well, after many words and a few tears, I felt so much better. Nothing had changed, but somehow, I was once again ready to face the day.

Aren't you thankful that the Lord hears our prayers and knows exactly what we need?
Sometimes, it's just a few minutes sitting on the couch talking with a girlfriend.

"I love the Lord, because He hears my voice and my prayers."
