Let’s take a quick walk together to the synagogue in Capernaum where an amazed crowd surrounds this man called Jesus. A man who is teaching with uncommon, yes, unprecedented authority. A man who has
just silenced and cast out demons with a few power-filled words! Jesus and his men then leave the synagogue as this astonished crowd talk excitedly of what they’ve just seen
and heard. “Can you believe how he teaches with such authority? What kind of
man speaks like that?” “Did you hear how
he told the demons to be silent? Did you see how the demons obeyed?”
After leaving the synagogue Jesus, James and John walk down a dusty road to the home of Simon and Andrew. They enter a house that would, on a normal day, be
filled with chatter and the aroma of meat on the spit and bread in the oven.
But today is far from normal. Simon’s mother-in-law is very ill, in bed with a
high fever. With haste they tell Jesus
of her sickness. Showing great compassion, He goes to her bedside, takes her fever-hot
hand in His, and helps her sit up. And just that quickly, her fever is gone.
Why, she actually feels well enough to prepare a meal for this house of hungry men!
After a miracle filled day, the sun is
finally setting. Oh, but the work of Jesus has
just begun. So many sick and so many demon-possessed have found their way to
Simon's house... Each one needing a healing touch, a power-filled word. One by
one Jesus touches, speaks, commands, and rebukes. And one by one they are
healed and set free. On this night, a huge crowd from all around Capernaum has gathered to watch
this man called Jesus. “The next morning Jesus awoke long before
daybreak and went out alone into the wilderness to pray. Later Simon and the others went out to find
him. They said, “Everyone is asking for you.” Mark 1:35-37 NLT
“Everyone is asking for you.”
Can you relate to that?
At home: the cleaning, the laundry, the
meals, the dishes, the children, your husband.
At work: the reports, the deadlines, the planning.
At
church: Bible study, women’s ministry, so many committees. All of it... so important, so very necessary.
Looking back over our day with Jesus, was
there anything that He did or said that wasn’t important, that wasn’t life
changing and necessary to so many? And
yet, in the midst of “Everyone is asking for you”, He chose to find a solitary place away from the legitimate, important needs of so many, to spend precious time
with His Father.
Our plates may seem full-to-the -point-of -cracking,
but
nothing is so important that it
trumps spending time with our Lord.
Let's keep each other in prayer...
That we may never forget to spend
precious time with Jesus.

So true...nothing is more important than our time with God...I don't always live by that principle, but I know it is true. Thanks, Gail
ReplyDeleteGail, I struggle with not letting all of the 'necessary' things crowd out my time with the Lord. I'm so thankful that He's patient with me! Thank you for coming by!
ReplyDeleteVery true.
ReplyDeleteDenise, Thanks for dropping by. God bless you, sweet sister!
Delete"Everyone is asking for you" Why YES - as a matter of fact I can relate! Thank you for putting my feelings at the constant demands into perspective!
ReplyDeleteBeckey, It sounds as if you have a lot on your plate! God's word is certainly good at putting life into perspective! It's good to hear from you again. Thanks so much for coming by!

ReplyDeleteLisa, you're so right. Nothing in our day should trump time with Jesus. Thanks so much for coming by. I'm on my way over to visit your site!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how much more I seem to get accomplished when I put Jesus first :)
ReplyDeleteKathleen, I couldn't agree more. I seem to accomplish so much more when first spend time with Him. Thank you for stopping in!
DeleteI just wrote down notes from this passage, preparing to write a devotion with a similar thought about "Everyone is asking for you." It's so fun to see the Holy Spirit speaking to different people with the same message. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. Bless you, Gail

Morgan, it's so easy to let life's busyness get in the way of spending time with Jesus. You're right... we have to find wayyy more time to be with Him!
DeleteI'm so glad you came by!
Oh my! Earlier this morning, I read a devotional from 'Streams in the Desert,' stressing the importance -- and the privilege!! -- of making time to be with the Lord in solitude, to talk with and listen to Him.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful post and a confirmation of what I was reminded of this morning. Thank you, Mary!!!
Pam
Pam, I love 'Streams in the Desert'. Isn't is neat how the Holy Spirit brings things before us in a way that says 'Stop, look, and listen... This is important!' Thanks for the encouragement. I'm so glad you came by!!

Thanks so much for coming by and following! I look forward to getting to know you!
DeleteI'm so glad you found my message asking for your link! You have a beautiful message here. I am not as good at putting our Lord first as I should be, so this was a timely reminder. One thought that crossed my mind when I read the words, "Everyone is asking for You" was that Jesus would never have responded to those people in the cranky, flustered, and not so nice a way that I respond to my family when I am feeling overwhelmed!
ReplyDeleteOh Sylvia, I'm so glad you found me! You've made such a good point. I'm soooo thankful that Jesus would never have responded like I do when I get tired and overwhelmed. Your site is such a blessing. Thanks so much for coming by!
DeleteMary - LOVE this post! You painted such a vivid picture of that story in the Bible and then drove it home with how it relates to our lives. "Everyone is asking for you..." Yes! Been there! These things that make up our to-do lists should never, ever come before us and God's word.
ReplyDeleteThis post will be included in this Saturday's "Weekend Reading" post, so that I can share it with my readers!
